ABOUT

Center for Research and Development in Agrifood Systems and Sustainability

CISAS is a multidisciplinary unit of research and development (R&D), based at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, which is focused on agri-food systems in the Mediterranean and sustainability issues. With an interdisciplinary approach combining research, development and innovation (RDI) into an applied science strategy, CISAS is heavily involved in promoting a balanced approach between food science, landscape, agriculture and sustainability studies.

CISAS is organized in two main axes, namely Agri-Food Systems and Resource Management and Sustainability. Specifically, the main goals are to contribute, through a strong community involvement, to:

  • Protect and promote the certification of origin of food products through the development of methodologies to guarantee authenticity;
  • Develop products and processes in a perspective of health promotion, well-being and safety;
  • Contribute to the sustainable development of the industrial tissue through the adoption of innovative practices towards the creation of new products and processes together with the valorization of industrial co-products as potential functional ingredients;
  • Valorize endogenous resources and traditional food products aiming at the preservation of autochthonous species and the protection of biodiversity;
  • Improve sustainably agricultural productivity with technologies in precision agriculture and organic farming practices;
  • Promote innovation in agrarian systems, in a context of climate change adaptation, particularly in water use efficiency, soil and plant protection and agro-biodiversity.

NUTRIR-CISAS
Main Objectives NUTRIR understands knowledge, its production and dissemination as key for achieving the sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations, reiterated by the various strategies of the European Union and also translated into several national policies. At NUTRIR “we think globally and act locally”. We develop R&D activities which are relevant to support Alto Minho sub-region in overcoming various eco-socio-economic challenges, while simultaneously preserve and valorise unique resources and assets, such as (agro)biodiversity, (bio)cultural heritage and others endogenous products.
Goals Our objectives include:
  • Develop products, processes and methods with an emphasis on the quality, productivity and sustainability of animal and vegetable food products.
  • Promoting intelligent, competitive and inclusive development based on local reality and capabilities.
  • Attracting and establishing qualified human resources who can continue to evaluate and find technical-scientific solutions for the training and qualification of local agents, economic dynamism and territorial sustainability.
  • Encourage scientific employment, the establishment of partnerships, the relationship with the region, the promotion of scientific and technological culture, the dissemination of data and research results throughout its activities and projects.
Activities NUTRIR proposes an R&D+I agenda based on three main lines of action (LA):
  • LA1. Viticulture and Enology: intends to transfer knowledge into the wine sector through the creation of a decision support system that supports winegrowers in vineyard management, the protection and maintenance of soil fertility, the preservation of endogenous grape varieties, the promotion of functional biodiversity, and the adoption of precision viticulture techniques for the efficient management of resources.
  • LA2. Animal Resources and Agrifood Production: anticipates intervening across the entire production chain, from valuing local agro-systems, to supporting transformation to streamlining commercialization and ehnance the marketing processes as to enable an increase in product value.
  • LA3. Landscape and Sustainability: dedicated to the sustainability of environmental and territorial systems supported by spatial models, information systems and territorial intelligence; prioritizes biodiversity and ecosystems, intending to boost innovation and the enhancement of endogenous resources in rural innovation and sustainable business models.
Results NUTRIR is committed to establishing a collaborative framework where stakeholders with deep roots in the territory play a crucial role. We are currently hands-on the following projects:
